5 Critical mistakes to avoid when choosing a solvent for electronics manufacturing

Back to Blog

A guide to selecting safe and effective solvents for electronics production

In high-precision electronics manufacturing, a solvent isn’t just a cleaning agent, it’s part of your quality control strategy. The wrong solvent choice can quietly compromise your production, damage sensitive components, or even become a hidden ESD hazard.

Let’s explore five crucial factors you absolutely shouldn’t overlook when selecting a solvent for your production line:

1. ESD Risk – Static in disguise

Many solvents seem clean and harmless, but some can carry a high triboelectric charge during use, meaning they generate static electricity that may zap your semiconductors before you even know it. Choose solvents labeled as “Anti-static” or “Low Tribo Charge” to protect ESD-sensitive devices.

2. Chemical compatibility – Powerful isn’t always safe

Aggressive solvents might clean thoroughly, but they may also etch your PCBs, deform plastics, or strip protective coatings in the process. Always test solvents with your actual materials and opt for those marked as “Non-reactive” with sensitive substrates.

3. Residue-free – Clean isn’t clean If it leaves a trace

Some solvent formulas can leave behind thin chemical films that interfere with conformal coatings or cause long-term corrosion. Go for fast-evaporating, residue-free solvents that are proven to leave surfaces ultra-clean and ready for the next step.

4. Flammability & Safety – Don’t gamble with health and fire hazards

Solvents with low flash points or strong odors can create fire risks or occupational hazards, especially in poorly ventilated areas. Always review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and avoid highly flammable formulas in enclosed environments.

5. Regulatory compliance – Clean by the Law

Does your solvent comply with RoHS, REACH, and VOC regulations? Are you shipping to regions with strict environmental laws?

Double-check international compliance before selecting a formula, especially for export-bound production.

Final thought:

“The right solvent isn’t just about cleaning, it’s about protecting your products, your people, and your brand.”

In the electronics world, cleanliness is precision. And precision demands smart solvent choices, engineered not just to clean, but to perform safely, consistently, and in full regulatory compliance.
